By signs or symptoms, we’re talking about things like:

• a beauty spot or mark that arises on a finger segment
• redness or swelling that’s isolated to a specific part of the finger
• an injury that happened on a particular finger subdivision (bruise/ sprain / break / cut / other)
• Stiffness, pain or sensitivity that’s isolated to a specific location on the finger

Venus is the Goddess of Love so the Mount of Venus relates to Love in many ways: Characteristics that can be read from the Venus Mount include:

• our warmth of character (e.g. how warm, loving, sympathetic and helpful we are to friends, family and loved ones), and by extrapolation we can extrapolate about the nature of relationships these people are likely to have,
• how much love we need to be shown (which some palmists translate to a person’s degree of neediness),
• how much love, passion and zest for life we have, and for the good things in life like fine food, drink, art, beauty and romance,

What does it mean if the Mount of Venus is Big?

A prominent, raised Venus Mount can indicate a person has one or more of the following traits:

• a warm personality with a tendency to have a good give and take of love, affection, sympathy, empathy and kind helpfulness. Often this is concurrently found in people who have loving, happy, warm friendships and relationships with people.
• potential neediness at times
• a strong zest for life and for the good things in life
• a strong sense of sensuality
• a potential weakness for overindulgence for something. That “something” differs from person to person. In one person it may be food, in anther it may be drink, sex, sexual partners or something else.

Note that the puffiness of the Venus Mount can fluctuate over time. The most notable example palmists have observed is that in some people, when they are experiencing feelings of love during dating or are preoccupied with feelings of love at other times, the Venus Mount may be puffier and more pronounced around these times.

What does it mean if the Venus Mount is Small?

When the Venus Mount is flat and small-looking, the qualities that are associated with the Mount of Venus are probably less prominent in the person’s life at the time period at which the Hand Reading is done.

Sometimes a flat and small Venus Mount can be found in individuals who have a tendency to be cold and not very demonstrative in their love, compassion, passion for life and sensuality.

At other times a flat Venus Mount may imply that the individual does not have a very warm, loving or active family, friend or romantic life.

And at other times still, a flat Venus Mount may indicate a time where the person’s Joy of Life is temporarily a little lacking due to current hardships – but remember that the Venus Mount can puff back up again when the hardship is overcome.

If you consider yourself to be a warm / loving / sensual / passionate person and find that you don’t have a very prominent Venus Mount, take heart in remembering that there is more than one way to see traits on the hand, and your individual positive Venus-like traits may express themselves in other markings on the hand.

Other things we can read in the Mount of Venus

• Family ties: The “family zone” is within the Venus Mount and we can read information about a person’s relationship with their family in this area of the palm. For example, if the Fate Line starts within the Mount of Venus, it can sometimes suggest a person’s career (the Fate Line) grew out of the Family in some way; so maybe they felt obliged to join the family business, or their working life grew out of a family obligation of some kind, or maybe they felt obligated to taking a familial caring, nurturing role in life.
• Relationships: Lines that are in the Venus Mount that cross the Life Line and make their way in the direction of the Heart line can indicate relationships that have been strong influences in our lives, and were closest to our hearts.
• Friendship lines: The Venus Mount is where Friendship Lines can be found. These are lines within the Venus Zone which show the main, strongly impacting friendships we have in our lives.
• Heartbreak lines: When a person had a great loss in their past or significant heartbreak, lines called Heartbreak lines may appear in the Mount of Venus.

Where is the Moon Mount?

As you can see from the diagram, the “Mount of Luna” or “Mount of Moon” (also sometimes called Mount Moon, the Moon Mount or the Lunar Mount) is located at the base of the palm, on the little finger’s side of the hand.

Mount Moon represents imagination, creativity, intuition and potential psychic talents. Some also suggest that it may be linked to memory, assoiating it with the strength of remembering memories of the past.

What does it mean if the Moon Mount is Big?

A big, raised, prominent lunar mount suggest that the qualities linked to the mount are present in large amounts. So an individual with a prominent Moon Mount may have a particularly good imagination, they may be particularly creative, and/ or particularly intuitive. Along with heightened intuition, increased sensitivity is sometimes found.

What does it mean if the Moon Mount is Small?

A flat lunar mount that doesn’t stand out in particular from the rest of the palm may suggest that the Moon Mount’s qualities are less well developed, or at least less prominently actively in use in the life of the individual.

In other cases, the qualities of imagination, creativity and intuition may be active but are expressed in other different markings on the hand. So if you know you have these Moon-linked qualities but have a flat, non-prominent Moon Mount, don’t worry – these qualities probably do show up elsewhere on your hand. The fact that we’re all individual and can express things differently also applies in palmistry.

Since many signs on the hand are not set in stone, I think the prominence of the Moon Mount may be something that can change over time as we develop and change.

Other things we can read in the Mount of Moon

Aside from examining its prominence, more advanced palmistry can examine the line formations that occur within the Moon area of the palm to read more information about the person.

A few examples of line features that are sometimes found in the Moon Mount include:

• A Head line that slopes towards the Moon Mount: Since the Moon Mount is linked to imagination, if a Head Line slopes towards it, it suggests a person tends to be a bit of a fantasist or a dreamer. These can be people who prefer escapism into the world of imagination and fantasy to real-life responsibilities, so for example may find themselves watching movies and reading books to get away from worrying about real-life problems.
• Memory loops: When a memory loop is found in the Moon Mount it suggests a talent for remembering things and also suggests creative talent.
• Bow of intuition: A “bow of intuition” within the Moon Mount looks like a curve-shaped line, and if present, it suggests a good intuition which can help people have helpful gut-feelings that can help them make good decisions.
• S-shaped whorl on the Moon Mount may suggest a possible talent for using the voice in a creative way, for example in singing.

Here’s a “Palmistry Mount Map” diagram showing you the mounts of the palm:

Observant readers will notice upon examining the diagram that the four mounts that are found underneath the fingers are named after the finger under which they are located, and you will later see that their meaning is also linked to the finger which they are found beneath.

Although most hand mounts are on the palm of the hand, there is also one on the dorsal surface of hand (ie on the back of the hand), called the Mars Mount (or “The Mouse”). We’ll get to that one in more detail later.

On the hand, the mounts may be slightly less obviously visible than they appear in the diagram and their location and size can differ slightly more person to person, but the diagram is a good guideline.

Ok, so we now know what palm mounts are, and where they are on the hand, but what can we tell about a person by looking at the mounts of the hand?

Reading Palm Mounts through examining their Prominence

Some palmists believe that the more prominent a mount appears on the hand, the more dominant its traits are in the person. A prominent mount may be one that’s particularly fleshy and raised. Sometimes a palm mount may show its prominence by appearing as a little bulge when you look at the silhouette of the hand from the front, back or side.

It can be tricky at first to recognise what’s a “normal bulge” and what’s an “unusually prominent bulge” that carries more significance. I recommend looking at as many hand as you can to get a good feel for differentiating the usual from the unusual.

Before I go into what large hands mean and what small hands indicate, first of all let’s talk about how to be sure whether someone’s hand falls into the large or small category. At first thought it may sound obvious, but when you consider tall people naturally tend to have bigger hands than short people, and children have smaller hands than adults, it becomes clear that assessing and measuring hand size requires a bit more explanation.

How to measure hand size

To know how big a hand is and whether to classify it as “large” or “small”, the best way to measure it is not relative to other people, but relative to their own body proportions.

To measure hand size, one easy way of doing it is asking the individual to hold their hand straight, and place it in front of their face, with the base of the palm resting on the chin and the fingers reaching upwards. Leave the hand straight and don’t curve it around the nose (if the nose is in the way, hold the hand a little farther away from the face).

• A large hand stretches above the mid-point of the forehead. The larger the hand the stronger the traits associated with big hands.
• A small hand reaches below the mid-point of the forehead. The smaller the hand the stronger the traits associated with small hands.

A hand that reaches just to the mid-point of the forehead and is therefore “average-sized” may have a mix of qualities that describe the large and small hand.

Small Hands Meaning

Ironically, the SMALLER the hand, the more these people tend to like looking at the BIG picture and not at the tiny details. Men and women with small hands tend to prefer being the delegators of work, overseeing the general work process and sometimes juggling several processes and people all at once, preferring to see the progress of several things at once, rather than being the people who deal with one thing in deep, intricate tiny detail.

Part of the reason they often don’t like tiny details is because girls and guys with small hands tend to be quick-thinkers and like it when things flow fast, whereas looking at the intricate details can sometimes be a process that sits more comfortably with people who like to take their time and mull things over carefully for a while before coming to conclusions. Small handed people are often quick decision makers, sometimes to the extent of being a little impulsive and taking risks without considering all the details completely. Because small handed folk tend to be quick-thinking, they also tend to like a fast pace in life and thrive when things in life are busy, and in social situations where talk is quick and sharp.

Big Hands Meaning

The LARGER the hand, the more these people tend to enjoy getting into the SMALL details of things, and they get satisfaction from doing it themselves on their own rather than delegating. The attention to detail can at times also make them notice problems more, so people with big hands may find themselves being more critical than small-handed folk who skim over such details.

Large handed men and women tend to feel most comfortable concentrating on one thing at a time and looking at it carefully, taking their time to consider all the options, facts and figures before coming to a firm conclusion or decision, and this need to consider the details can make decision-making at times a lengthy and difficult process. Contrary to quick-thinking, risk-taking small-handed folk, big handed people are often more careful, slow and steady thinkers, so if you’re with someone and they have big hands, be prepared that they may need some more time to process things. In some extreme cases, a large-handed person may find himself prone to getting lost in the detail and not seeing the big picture so it can be helpful if they have someone in their life who is there to remind them what the big picture is from time to time.

In palmistry, hand size is linked to the Earth element, so the larger the hands, the more the amount of Earth element a person has. Since Earthy qualities tend to be more slow, steady and grounded, women and men with big hands tend to be more in tune with these qualities of slow steadiness. This comes across in social situations too where girls and guys with big hands tend to be more patient, observant and thoughtful.

Remember to look at more than just hand size before coming to conclusions

As with all signs that you read in the hand, it’s important to see how the sign fits in with other signs and details on the hand and not come to a strong conclusion based on one sign alone (can you tell from that statement that I have large hands myself? ).

It is possible to find a hand size that conflicts with other signs on the hand. For example, you may find a small-handed individual (indicating quick-thinking and potential impulsiveness) together with other markings that show the person is cautious, analytical and loves acquiring knowledge. In this case, you’ll read the hand by seeing which signs there are more of. If there are three signs indicating a careful thinker and one sign indicating impulsive thinking, it can be interpreted as a person who is generally a careful thinker – and maybe rarely they have moments of impulsivity. In other occasions it may indicate a seemingly contradictive quality of being a careful AND a quick thinker. Contradicting signs with seemingly contradicting qualities may lead to internal frustrations in the individual but if you’ve lived with this kind of internal contradiction your whole life, you’ll often find these people have found a way to make peace with their conflicting tendencies.

The best way to recognise different hand colors is to look at as many hands as you can because it is only when you see hands side by side that you really start noticing the subtle hue differences. For example a “yellow tinted” hand or a “white hand” can look pink if you look at it on its own, but side by side with a truly pink hand that doesn’t have a hint pale or yellow tint to it, only then do you notice the yellowness or whiteness of it. In particular, it can be helpful to practice looking at different color hues on individuals with different ethnic backgrounds to help you train your eye to recognise the tint beyond the underlying skin color.

Here is a quick guideline to what different tints and hues of the skin can indicate.

Pinkish palm color

This is the normal color you’d expect from a palm. A pink hue is a sign of a normal, healthy state of being with good vitality, good amounts of energy, and a generally good mental state. It may also be linked to feeling at ease, and if it’s found regularly in a person it can suggest an easy-going nature.

Red palm color

Note that people’s palm colour can become redder if they have just used their hands in physical manual labour or in a workout, if they’ve just done a handstand or if they are feeling very hot, so in these cases a red coloration may not have a more in-depth emotional significance. But some people have red palms even in cold weather and without having put their hands through physical effort, and in this case, the meaning of the color can be a reflection of their emotional state.

Intuitively, you can feel that red is a more intense color than pink, so it makes sense that a red palm would be associated with more intense energies and emotional states.

A red hand can be associated with:

• Excess anger energy which may manifest as behaving aggressively, having a short fuse, feeling angry or frustrated.
• Excess energy in general which may be from feeling hyperactive, excited, passionate, strong emotions, celebratory states or feeling strongly joyful about something.
• Fiery spirit: If a person is consistently found to have red-coloured hands and it’s not just a one-off state brought on by a temporary situation that has induced high-energy-emotions, it may indicate that the person has a tendency towards a fiery spirit, impatience, and a quick temper in general. This is a “pita” state in Ayurveda.

To release the excess energy associated with a red palm, something like using up the energy in exercise, dance, physical labour or even housework can be a helpful energy release to aid in returning the energy level to a more even keel.

White or pale palm colour

White colored palms may be linked to physical conditions like being out in cold weather, but other times, if it exist in a person regardless of the temperature outside, it can have another meaning.

Intuitively, you can feel that white is a colour that is more neutral and low in energy (as opposed to red for example). Similarly, the connotations of a white hand can indicate lower energy states which can include:

• Low energy: Feeling a lack of physical energy, strength or vitality.
• Having a quiet, relaxed day in, doing low energy activities like reading, writing, being on the computer.. that kind of stuff. Academics are often found to have white tinted palms.
• A more mild-mannered spirit: If a person is consistently found to have white-tinted hands, it may indicate a person who has a more quiet, calm, soft-spoken, low-paced spirit to them. They may be interested in things but will probably show it in a quiet, less energetic, less enthusiastic, less obvious way. Some palmists also associate a white coloured palm with a tendency to be a little more on the cold-side emotionally in general. Bear in mind that this may just be a temporary state and that these things can change from day today and moment to moment.
• Paleness can sometimes look similar to pale yellowness so sometimes a paleness may be linked to feeling anxious or worried about something.

Yellow palm colour

Remember we’re talking about a subtle yellow tint to the palm rather than a bright yellow palm. If you spot a yellow hand, first of all, rule out the confounding factor of a tan or of rare medical issues with the liver (jaundice). If neither of these are present, a yellow tint to the palm may indicate the following:

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the yellow color is associated with states of worry, overthinking things, being overly critical and overworking. In palmistry books you’ll find this matches up to their interpretation of a yellow palm that found consistently in a person (and not just as a one-off state), being linked to a natural tendency to be a bit of a worrier with a tendency to be critical of themselves and / or others. If it is a temporary yellow state, it could represent a more fleeting time of anxiety or worry.

Blue tinted palm

In TCM tongue diagnosis, blue / purple hues are often associated with stagnation. Similarly, in Medical terms, blue tinted skin on your body can show poor circulation. On the palm, these states of “stagnation” and “poor circulation” can also be applied. This may symbolise a person is feeling stagnant or stuck about something in their life.

Side note: If you find yourself with blue-tinted hands or feet, shaking the foot or hand about can get the circulation flowing back to it, to get the colour to be pink again. For a more permanent fix for bad circulation though, it would be better to work on whatever the actual cause for the stagnation is; be it physical, emotional or both.

Advanced Palm Color Reading in Palmistry

In more advanced Hand Reading, you’ll be able to notice that there are different tints of color in certain locations on the hand. For example, maybe just the tip of the index finger (representing spirituality and connection to their true, wise self) will have a blue hue whilst the rest of the hand is more white, or perhaps the “family zone” of the palm is red whereas the rest of the hand is pink. In these cases you’ll be able to use the same principles in this article and apply the color’s meaning to the specific areas that the affected zones of the hand represent.

Here’s a quick rundown on what the two hands represent in hand reading:

Left hand meaning

The left hand is associated with the yin part of the yin yang – that is the feminine side.

On a related side-note, you may have heard of the left brained vs right brained scientific classification of people; whereby people have a dominant brain hemisphere. It’s interesting to note that the brain hemisphere that is linked with the left-hand (ie the Yin feminine hand) is linked to feminine-linked qualities like intuition, emotion, memory, music, imagination and creativity.

The left hand is also considered the more personal hand; the hand that’s related to your private, inner self. So the left hand is associated with how you are in the privacy of your home, how you behave with your nearest and dearest, and how you are in the privacy of your own emotional and psychological mind. Some palmists take this idea further to say that the left hand represents your unconscious mind – the things that even you aren’t aware of but that are there.

The left hand is also associated with your in-born-potential – your natural tendencies and talents; whether or not you are using them right now in your life.

Right hand meaning

The right hand is associated with the yang part of the yin yang – that is the masculine side.

Again, as a related side note, in the left-brained vs right brained scientific theory, the right hand is connected to the hemisphere of the brain that is linked to more masculine qualities like rational thinking, logic, language, science and business.

The right hand is also associated with your public face – the face you show when you’re at work, with strangers, with friends who you aren’t that close to – the face you show when you are facing the world.

Reading the right hand reveals information about the state of your conscious mind as well as how you are currently living your life right now (as opposed to your in-born potential which may or may not be visible in your life).

A memory aid to help you remember which hand symbolizes what, is remembering that when we shake hands with a stranger, we always shake with the RIGHT hand. The right hand we said, is associated with our public face, so the right-handed handshake is effectively confirming that we are offering our public face at the first meeting.
It is only in more intimate situations that your left hand touches other people. The left hand comes into play in a hug, a massage or in other more private situations.

So before we dive into what different signs and markings on the hands mean, let’s first start with a bit of background.

Hand Reading can be divided into two main parts

Within hand reading, there are two main parts:
1.) Chiromancy = Reading the Lines on the palm
2.) Chirognomy = Reading hand qualities like hand shape, color and texture, and finger qualities.

We’ll be looking into both these parts of hand reading over the course of this article series.

Why do we have lines on our palms in the first place?

Usually the first thing people think about when it comes to palmistry is reading the lines on the palms. But have you ever wondered why we have lines on our palms?

A common misconception is that the lines on the hand are there through the folding of the skin that occurs due to repeated hand movements. Research by palmists has found that this is not the case. Some palm lines have been found to already be present when the baby is in the womb and the lines develop throughout life. During puberty for example the lines that relate to emotional and sexual development are often seen to change, and at other times, new lines can form and old ones can fade, in accordance with what you’re going through in life.

In a text written by palmist Frank Clifford (1), he says that the lines on the palm are directly linked to nerve endings from the brain, which may explain why a lot of hand markings relate to brain-based traits like talents and psychological tendencies.

Are palmistry markings and hand signs something that can change or are they set in stone?

One thing that’s important to note about hand reading is that apart from fingerprints, many lines on the hand can change over time and there are also more fleeting hand signs like hand colour and texture that can change from moment to moment and day to day. So if a palmist gives you a reading, whatever he says isn’t something that has to be true forever – it’s most likely accurate just for the time of the reading.

The most important message I’d like to get across in this introduction to hand reading is that no matter what your hand signs say right now, if there’s something in a hand reading that you don’t like, remember that signs and lines can change.

Palmistry cannot predict your future

Another important note about hand reading is that palmistry is not an accurate predictor of the future. I’ll repeat this because it’s important: palmistry cannot predict your future in a certain way.

Hand readers can give you a guess at which path you’re heading towards, but you always have the power to choose a different path if you wish.

Never read a hand marking in isolation

Yet another important point that I wanted to include in the introduction is that generally, it is best to interpret hand signs whilst considering the whole hand. The interpretation of a certain hand sign on its own could be different if it’s found alongside other signs on the hand so reading it in isolation could lead to an inaccurate reading.

Throughout this series, I will be talking about isolated signs but as you hear about them, please do bear in mind that all signs need to be interpreted in the context of the whole hand.

In the article “Meaning of rings on fingers“, we discussed that wearing rings in general can convey either a subconscious feeling that a person feels constraint or restriction in the traits that are related to that finger, or it may show that they feel they need strengthening, support or a boost with regards to the traits of that finger.
