As mentioned in “Meaning of rings on fingers“, a ring reveals a subconscious feeling that a person is either restricted or needs strengthening in the traits related to that finger. So in order to understand the meaning of wearing a ring on the thumb, first it’s useful to look at the traits that are associated with the thumb:

Thumb Traits and corresponding Thumb Ring Meaning
The thumb represents the following:

  • Will power & Motivation: Wearing a ring on the thumb can reveal a desire to strengthen the willpower and motivation. This can express itself in several ways. In some people their desire to boost their motivation and willpower can be expressed as them putting on the appearance of being very go-getting and enthusiastic. In other people, the strong desire to be motivated may be there but they may not be feeling strong-willed enough to express it yet (hence the need for the supportive ring). Yet in other people, a thumb ring can represent a stubborn streak because their motivation and will is strengthened by the ring to the extent that they can be stubborn about getting their own way.
  • Control: By putting a ring of strength on the finger of control, a person with a thumb ring may express a need to have control over things. They may have a strong need to do things their own way. An example of this could be a fashion stylist or designer who enjoys influencing  others regarding what to wear eg. fashion designer Rachel Zoe wears thumb rings occasionally. Jessica Alba has been spotted wearing thumb rings occasionally and in this video interview mentioned how important it is to her to feel like she’s in control of things.
  • Forcefulness & Aggression: Someone who wears a ring on the thumb may express aggressive tendencies as this quality of forcefulness is strengthened.

Wearing a thumb ring on the left vs right hand:
The left hand corresponds to the personal, private life (eg. at home with family) whereas the right hand relates to our more public life (eg. at work, in society etc).

So wearing a thumb ring on the left hand indicates a stubbornness or a need to be in control in your private life, whereas if the thumb ring if on the right hand, this need expresses itself more in your public life.

Celebrities spotted wearing thumb rings:
- Nicole Richie
- Vanessa Hudgens

- Patti Stanger (I couldn’t find a photo but I noticed it in some episodes when watching her on Millionare Matchmaker)
